About Vape Batteries
What it is
Vape batteries are typically 18650-type lithium-ion batteries, a common type of rechargeable battery used in e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes contain nicotine and lithium batteries, making them hazardous waste. The lithium batteries can become damaged and cause fires, creating significant safety risks during disposal and waste handling operations.(1, 2, 6)
How it’s recycled
How to prepare it
All batteries need to be properly prepared by either bagging them each separately or taping the terminals with fully transparent tape to eliminate potential fire hazards. If the battery is removable from the device, it should be separated and the terminals taped with fully transparent, non-conducting tape before taking to a household hazardous waste collection site or battery recycler.(1, 2, 3)
Common mistakes
Environmental impact
Lithium batteries can catch fire, especially when damaged. When placed in household trash and recycling bins, lithium batteries often get damaged by trash compactors and can cause fires during transportation and at waste and recycling facilities. Vape batteries often end up in landfills where they can explode and cause landfill fires. Lithium based fires are difficult to put out. Nicotine is toxic and poses a risk to both workers and the environment.(1, 2, 3)
Did you know?
Even though most disposable vapes contain a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, they are designed to be discarded once the liquid runs out, wasting valuable battery materials that could be reused.(6)
