About Vape Batteries
What it is
Vape batteries are typically lithium-ion batteries that contain materials that can harm the environment if not disposed of properly. Lithium batteries can easily catch fire or explode and have caused fires at municipal solid waste facilities across the United States. Batteries contain valuable materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium that can be reused through recycling.
How it’s recycled
Certified facilities depower, disassemble, and recover metals from vape batteries. Hydrometallurgical methods grind spent batteries and dissolve the resulting materials in acid before extracting recyclable elements using different chemicals, while pyrometallurgical methods melt waste at high temperatures to extract recyclable materials.
How to prepare it
If battery is removable, take it out and put it in a plastic baggie or tape the terminals with fully transparent tape. Turn off the device and remove the rechargeable battery before disposal, and store all items in a cool, temperature-controlled environment and in a container that is sealed and clearly labeled for hazardous waste. Dismantling of sealed, single-use vapes to remove batteries is not recommended.
Common mistakes
DO NOT attempt to remove batteries that are not designed to be easily removed; attempting to remove embedded batteries can cause fires that endanger you and workers who handle this waste. Never put e-cigarettes in your household trash or recycling.
Environmental impact
If disposed of incorrectly, lithium batteries can release toxic chemicals into soil and water and cause dangerous fires in waste facilities. As batteries degrade, they can leach their chemicals into the environment. Disposable vape waste now contributes to 30 tons of lithium discarded each year – the equivalent needed to produce 3,350 electric vehicle batteries.
Did you know?
A lithium-ion battery can still hold 80% of its thermal capacity after it is done, meaning even dead batteries remain a fire hazard.
