Automotive batteries are rechargeable lead-acid batteries that contain lead and sulfuric acid and are used as a power source, most commonly to start cars.

Material Details

Automotive batteries include batteries used in automobiles, trucks, equpment, RV's and some other recreational vehicles. They tend to be Laed-Acid based batteries, but some lithium chemistries are beginning to make appearances in certain vehicles. This category does not include EV batteries or Lithium automotive batteries, which should be recycled separately at locations which accept them.

Also known as: car batteries, truck batteries, equipment batteries, lead acid batteries, vehicle batteries, agm batteries

About Batteries - Automotive

What it is

A typical lead-acid battery used in a car or truck contains sulfuric acid and 18 to 20 pounds of lead. Lead acid batteries are 100% recyclable and have the highest recycling rate of any product sold in the United States (99% per the EPA). Lead, a toxic heavy metal, can pose serious health issues and adversely affect the environment if disposed of improperly by contaminating both ground and surface water.

How it’s recycled

A machine called a hammer mill is used to break the car battery into small pieces, during which the battery's sulfuric acid is collected and held separately from the broken battery chunks. The lead falls to the bottom of a vat while the plastic floats at the top, where it can be easily removed. The sulfuric acid is neutralized using a compound similar to baking soda, turning it into water that is cleaned and treated, or it is converted into sodium sulfate, a white powder used to make glass, textiles and laundry detergent. The recovered lead is melted into lead ingots and reused to make new lead plates and components for future batteries, while the plastic is formed into pellets and molded into new battery cases.

How to prepare it

Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect against acid leaks. Place it upright in a sturdy container to prevent leakage, and keep it away from metal objects to avoid short circuits.

Common mistakes

Many people try to throw automotive batteries in the trash without knowing how highly polluting it is for the environment; it is best to take it to a location where used batteries are collected for recycling. Keep the battery upright at all times to avoid acid spills and store away from heat, sparks, or flammable materials.

Environmental impact

Due to lead's high toxicity, improper disposal can harm human health and the environment. Inappropriate recycling operations release considerable amounts of lead particles and fumes emitted into the air, deposited onto soil, water bodies and other surfaces, with both environment and human health negative impacts. Lead-acid battery recycling is a crucial process that helps conserve natural resources, reduce environmental impact, and support a circular economy.
