About Medical Equipment

What it is

Durable medical equipment is any type of equipment that helps individuals with disabilities or temporary injuries manage their personal needs and daily activities more easily. Recycling and reusing equipment saves medical costs and helps those who need these items to maintain their independence. Thousands of pounds of recyclable material are kept out of landfills every year through reuse programs.

How it’s recycled

Donated durable medical equipment and assistive technology are cleaned, refurbished, sanitized, diverted from local dumps, and delivered to people in need. Items are sanitized and refurbished before being offered to the community. Walkers made primarily of aluminum can be accepted by scrap metal recyclers, while electric wheelchairs or scooters that no longer work can be recycled via local e-waste recyclers.

How to prepare it

Equipment should be in good working order and not require repair. Equipment should be thoroughly cleaned before donation. Items must be clean and in working order or only require minor repair depending on the accepting organization.

Common mistakes

People often fail to check equipment for stickers indicating specific vendors or agencies items should be returned to, especially if the equipment is not under their ownership. Another common mistake is attempting to donate items contaminated with blood or containing sharps waste, which require specialized medical waste disposal providers.

Environmental impact

Many of these devices contain elements like mercury, lead, and certain plastics that can leach into soil and groundwater if improperly disposed in landfills, poisoning ecosystems. Reusing a refurbished walking aid results in 87% lower carbon emissions on average than providing a brand new walking aid.

Did you know?

Reusing a refurbished walking aid, including parts replacement, results in 87% lower carbon emissions on average than providing a brand new walking aid.
