About Eyeglasses

What it is

Eyeglass frames are typically made of plastics like acetate and nylon, or metals like stainless steel, titanium, and aluminum. More than four million pairs of eyeglasses are landfilled every year in North America. While glasses are made of recyclable parts like metal, plastics, and glass, these parts must be separated in order to go through the recycling process.

How it’s recycled

Eyeglasses collected through specialized programs are cleaned, calibrated, repaired, and sorted by prescription for reuse through vision missions. For damaged glasses, frames and lenses are reduced into raw materials—metals are melted down for other applications, while plastics are re-fabricated into other useful goods.

How to prepare it

Gather all old eyeglasses, including non-prescription pairs, sunglasses, and reading glasses. Inspect each pair for damages or missing parts. Rinse lenses and frames with mild soap and lukewarm water to remove oils and debris; avoid household cleaners that can damage coatings. Dry with a lint-free cloth and secure temple arms with a small band or place each pair in a soft pouch or clean case if available.

Environmental impact

Up to 75% of cellulose acetate used by eyewear manufacturers is typically wasted during production. More than 4 million pairs of reading glasses in North America are thrown away each year, equating to about 250 metric tons of non-biodegradable waste. Carbon emissions are produced during all stages of eyeglass-making, and when plastic frames are discarded, they leak microplastics into the ground and water.

Did you know?

Up to 75 percent of acetate (a popular eyeglass frame material) is discarded during eyeglass production, despite being hypoallergenic and lightweight.
