ReUse IT programs and information

ReUse IT offers the community several extremely affordable ways to access used PC and Mac systems and other still-usable electronics that have been diverted from our landfill.

Green Star of Interior Alaska’s ReUse IT program has long worked on Fairbanks and Interior Alaska information technology reuse and recycling. Our efforts are designed to keep these dangerous materials out of our landfills. ReUse IT operates a retail store and an eBay presence.

Reboot IT is the program through which we offer low or no cost Technology Grants to charity organizations and financially distressed individuals and families in Interior Alaska. Suggested donation per-system is just $20 to cover hard cost of the new SSD.

Repair IT - Green Star of Interior Alaska's PC and Mac desktop and laptop repair, refurbish and upgrade program.

We have recently added Repair IT – a computer repair, refurbish and upgrade service for PC and Mac desktops and laptops. Wherever possible we use local repurposed parts. Sorry – no cell phones or tablets yet.

We have also begun Rebuild IT – a hands-on class where students of all ages can build-their-own PC. These systems are built almost entirely out of locally-reclaimed components with the exception of the new SSD or M.2 hard drive.

The money we earn from these programs helps to insure the continuation of the programs and also supports our many education and outreach activities in Fairbanks and Interior Alaska. We welcome your support as a Reboot IT applicant, as a customer, as a donor, as a volunteer or as an advocate sharing with your network about our programs; or as any combination of those you choose.

Here is more information about each ReUse IT program and how to take advantage of them:

The ReUse IT storefront

ReUse IT is the umbrella program under which all Green Star information technology resale programs operate; however, it also has a home. At 2134 Texaco Ave (our HQ and electronics recycling facility) we also have a small storefront offering low-cost, working, tested desktop and laptop computers as well as a number of other components and IT related products. Each system has a brand new high-speed SSD drive and fresh OS installed so you never have to worry about prior data or poor drive performance! Each system is otherwise built almost entirely from local repurposed parts and comes with a 100 day hardware guarantee! The store is open from 10-5 Tue.-Fri. and 1-5 on Sat. Stop by often, The inventory changes regularly.

We also operate an eBay store. You can look at the items we are selling on eBay any time. If you see something you like, call (907) 452-4152 or email and let us know. We would much rather sell to someone local than elsewhere. If you reach us before the item sells on eBay, we are happy to sell it to you instead.

Low cost computers for charities and those in need

We receive a number of computer systems through our electronics recycling activities which have served their purpose for their previous owners, but which otherwise function just fine. We offer a number of these systems to local charities and disadvantaged individuals for a low suggested donation of just $20 per machine.

We prioritize families with children who need to connect for school, or those who do not have the means to buy or access to a computer currently. After that we consider requests from charitable organizations in need of computers. Some of the Reboot IT eligible machines are older than those offered in the ReUse IT store, and may be missing certain newer features, but all the machines have been checked, cleaned, hard-drive replaced with a new high-speed SSD, and have a freshly installed operating system.

If you are in a position to donate to keep this important program funded it would be very helpful. Your donation in any amount is greatly appreciated – by all of us here at Green Star, and also by those who will benefit from your gift to the program.

Hands-on build-your-own PC classes for all ages

Our latest entry (to wildly popular acclaim) are our instructor led Rebuild IT hands-on build-your-own PC classes – Rebuild IT. We have a variety of classes for all ages K- adult. There are several build options based on the performance tier you are after in your new-to-you PC.

As with all of our programs, this one too is designed to help us reduce waste, reuse components, and recycle everything else. The systems built always contain a brand new SSD or M.2 solid state drive but are otherwise almost entirely local repurposed components. Because of this the classes are extremely affordable. You can use the link below to see our upcoming classes and current build options. Whether you are 3 or 103 and looking for an internet-only system or a gaming monster, we have a class for you.

Classes last about 4 hours after which you walk out with a brand new-to-you PC – and a big smile on your face!

Thank you for your continued support of our mission and programs

We truly could not do what we do without the overwhelming support of this wonderful community. From all of us at Green Star – thank you!
