About Ink/Toner Cartridges
What it is
Each cartridge contains plastics, metals, and toxic materials, making recycling the best environmentally responsible option. In the U.S. alone, over 375 million empty cartridges are thrown away each year, yet 97% of the materials used in printer cartridges can be recycled. Globally, billions of cartridges are used annually — but less than 30% are recycled.
How it’s recycled
The cartridge is sorted, disassembled, or shredded. Other post-consumer plastics are added to the process and recycled materials are used in new cartridges and other everyday products. When cartridges are recycled, they are often refurbished and refilled for reuse, which significantly reduces the need for new raw materials such as plastic, metal, and ink.
How to prepare it
Turn off your printer before removing cartridges to avoid electrical issues. Handle cartridges gently to prevent spills or toner dust release. Place cartridges in a sealed plastic bag, anti-static bag (for toner), or their original packaging. Wrap each cartridge individually to prevent ink or toner from leaking onto other items or causing contamination.
Environmental impact
Cartridge plastics have a notably slow decomposition rate that ranges between 450 to 1000 years to be fully decomposed, depending on the cartridge type. Manufacturing a single ink cartridge emits approximately 4.8 kg of CO2 greenhouse gases, excluding the ink inside. Improper disposal of cartridges can lead to water pollution as chemicals from the ink and toner can seep into water bodies, affecting aquatic life and potentially contaminating drinking water sources.
Did you know?
HP has recycled over 875 million ink and toner cartridges globally since 1991 through their sustainable closed-loop recycling system.
