About Manilla file folders
What it is
Manila folders are office paper products that include high-grade papers such as stationery and can be recovered as "file stock" in recycling systems. These folders can be reused by sticking a new label over the previous one, extending their useful life before recycling. Most non-white office paper, including file folders, can be recycled through standard paper recycling programs.(1, 4, 7)
How it’s recycled
Recycled paper is combined with water in a large vessel called a pulper that acts like a blender to separate fibers, then passes through screens and other separation processes to remove contaminants such as ink, clays, dirt, plastic and metals. Deinking processes use special systems aided by soaps or surfactants to wash or float ink and particles away from the fiber. The deinked pulp is then dried or partially dried before delivery to a paper mill.(5, 7, 9)
How to prepare it
Paper clips and binder clips can be removed and reused, though removal is not required. Remove plastic labels or fasteners before recycling. Ensure folders are clean, dry, and free from food residue or excessive contamination. Flatten folders to streamline processing at recycling facilities.(3, 4, 9)
Common mistakes
Paper mills are set up to remove common contaminants such as staples and paper clips from pulped paper, therefore it is not necessary to remove such items before recycling, although removing them allows for reuse. Common mistakes include leaving plastic fasteners or labels attached, and recycling folders that are contaminated with food, grease, or liquids which can compromise the recycling batch.(4, 5, 9)
Environmental impact
Paper recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions that can contribute to climate change by avoiding methane emissions and reducing energy required, extends the fiber supply and contributes to carbon sequestration, and saves considerable landfill space. Paper and paperboard recycling resulted in the largest portion of total municipal solid waste reduction, over 155 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2018.(2, 6, 8)
