About Clothing
What it is
The main source of textiles in municipal solid waste is discarded clothing, though only about 15% of used clothes and other textiles in the United States get reused or recycled. Clothes and other textiles that are too old or worn can still have an afterlife in other products, as the fibers can be separated and recycled back into new textiles or used as stuffing for upholstered furniture and car seats or home insulation material.
How to prepare it
Items should be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, and odors. Even stained and torn items can be donated as long as they are dry and free of odors. Donate clothing, shoes, and bedding/linens in separate bags with no hangers.
Environmental impact
In 2018, 17 million tons of textiles were generated, representing 5.8% of total municipal solid waste. Materials can take 200+ years to decompose in a landfill, and during decomposition, textiles generate greenhouse methane gas and leach toxic chemicals and dyes into groundwater and soil.
