About Aluminum Beverage Containers
What it is
Aluminum is one of the most recycled materials in use today, and a recycled aluminum beverage can is often recycled directly back into itself—a process that can happen virtually infinitely. Making recycled aluminum only takes around 5% of the energy needed to make new aluminum, and the average recycled content of an aluminum can made in the U.S. is 71%.
How it’s recycled
Cans are combined with other aluminum cans in a holding area, crushed and shaped into large bales, then sent to recycling facilities where they are shredded into tiny pieces, heated into molten aluminum, and formed into an ingot. After cans are separated and impurities such as residual paints and lacquers are removed, they are shredded and melted in special furnaces to ensure the recycled aluminum meets stringent industry standards for purity and quality. The molten aluminum is cast into ingots, which are then rolled into coils.
How to prepare it
Empty liquids and give cans a quick rinse before placing them in the recycling bin. Remove plastic rings or six-pack holders. Cans don't need to be crushed, though crushing them can save space in your recycling bin.
Common mistakes
Failing to rinse cans to remove beverage residue, especially sugary drinks that can attract insects and contaminate other recyclables. Not removing plastic components like rings from six-pack holders, though paper labels can be left on as they burn off during melting.
Environmental impact
Recycling aluminum uses 95% less energy than producing aluminum from raw materials and saves 97% of greenhouse gas emissions produced in the primary production process; recycling 1 tonne of aluminum saves 9 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 4 tonnes of bauxite. By reducing the need for bauxite mining and processing, it helps preserve natural habitats and biodiversity, and recycling aluminum cuts down on landfill usage. Aluminum can be recycled repeatedly, back into use, with no theoretical limitation.
Did you know?
From the time you throw a can into the recycling bin, it only takes about 60 days to recycle it into a brand-new can, and aluminum cans can be recycled indefinitely. It takes 500 years for that same can to decompose in a landfill.
