About Socks
What it is
Textiles, including socks, represented 17 million tons of generation in 2018, accounting for 5.8 percent of total municipal solid waste generation that year. Textile waste harms the environment by, for example, releasing greenhouse gases when disposed of in landfills. The recycling rate for all textiles was 14.7 percent in 2018, with 2.5 million tons recycled, though most textiles can be reused or recycled rather than landfilled.(1, 2, 3)
How it’s recycled
Shoddy is made from shredded fibers and used for insulation and stuffing, while textile-to-textile recycling is the process of turning textile waste into new fibers. Buyers shred them into a new raw material for carpet padding, car insulation, and other industrial uses. Textiles are not processed through material recovery facilities due to a lack of collection infrastructure and limited textile sorting technology.(1, 2, 6)
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
Even if items are stained and torn items of any style, age or, condition can be donated as long as they are dry and free of odors, yet many people discard textiles that could be recycled. People often throw socks and other textiles into regular household trash rather than utilizing textile recycling programs or donation centers.(6, 7)
Environmental impact
According to EPA's last reported data, in 2018, 66 percent of textile waste was landfilled, 19 percent was combusted with energy recovery, and 15 percent was recycled. If discarded in a landfill, these textiles contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases (e.g., methane) as they degrade. The degradation process for synthetic fibers (e.g., polyesters) can take hundreds of years.(1, 2, 3)
