About Scrap Metal
What it is
Scrap metal recycling refers to the recovery and processing of recyclable metal materials from end-of-life products and structures so they can be reintroduced as raw material for the production of new goods. Unlike many other materials, metals can be recycled time and time again without their properties getting degraded. The generation of ferrous metals was 19.2 million tons in 2018, representing 6.6 percent of total municipal solid waste generation.(2, 4, 5)
How it’s recycled
Scrap metal is sorted by type, size and readiness for shipping, using magnetic separation, visual identification and advanced technology to sort materials efficiently. After metals are separated into ferrous and non-ferrous categories and cut or shredded to reduce volume, they are sent to mills where they are melted down and smelted, then made into new steel and other metal products.(5, 6, 7, 8)
How to prepare it
The best way to prepare scrap metal for recycling is to separate metals by type and grade, remove nonmetal attachments and contaminants, use labeled containers, and cut or bundle oversize pieces. Separate ferrous metals (containing iron) from non-ferrous metals (like copper, aluminum, and brass) using a magnet test—metals that stick to a magnet are ferrous.(5, 8, 9, 10)
Common mistakes
Not cleaning scrap metal before recycling is a common mistake that can affect both the value and the recycling process, as residual materials like oils, fluids, and non-metal attachments can contaminate the recycling process and reduce the metal's purity. Failing to separate metals properly can lead to contamination, and mixing ferrous and non-ferrous metals can significantly decrease their value.(5)
Environmental impact
Steel recycling in the United States saves the energy equivalent to electrical power for about one-fifth of American households for one year, and one ton of recycled steel saves the energy equivalent of 3.6 barrels of oil and 1.49 tons of iron ore over the production of new steel. Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals, and prevents pollution and reduces greenhouse gases by reducing the need to mine and process new raw materials.(2, 3, 4)
