About Pipe (metal)
What it is
Recycling iron and steel scrap comes from many sources including steel cans and other steel products, appliances, automobiles, and construction materials. Metal pipes—whether ferrous (steel, iron) or non-ferrous (copper, brass, aluminum)—are valuable recyclable materials that divert waste from landfills and conserve natural resources. Recycling metal pipes reduces the need for energy-intensive mining and manufacturing of virgin metals.(1, 3)
How it’s recycled
Magnetic separation is used to distinguish ferrous metals (like iron and steel) from non-ferrous metals (like copper, aluminum, and brass). After sorting, scrap metal is typically shredded or compacted, then melted and refined before being recast into new products. The recycled metal can be used to manufacture new pipes or other metal products.(1, 2)
How to prepare it
Aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel should not be mixed together. Sorting materials into basic categories helps maximize scrap metal value and reduces sorting time at the yard. To prepare scrap metal for recycling, remove insulation from wire when viable, as well as plastic, rubber, wood, or other non-metal attachments. Cut tubing, wire, or beams into manageable lengths to make transportation and processing easier.(5, 6)
Common mistakes
One of the most frequent mistakes is failing to separate different types of metal. Many people toss all their scrap into one pile, assuming it will be sorted later, but unsorted metals receive much lower payouts. Many scrap items include materials that cannot be recycled with metal, such as plastic, rubber, wood, or insulation attached to metal components, which lower scrap value because they must be removed during processing.(4, 5)
Environmental impact
According to the EPA, metal recycling cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 29 million tons of CO₂ annually, akin to taking 6.3 million cars off the road. The EPA notes that the metal recycling industry in the United States alone prevents millions of tons of material from entering landfills each year, conserving valuable space and reducing contamination risks. Recycling metal pipes also reduces the environmental damage associated with mining operations, including habitat destruction and water pollution.(1, 3)
