About Paper (mixed)
What it is
Mixed paper is a broad category that includes discarded mail, telephone books, paperboard, magazines, and catalogs. Mills use mixed paper to produce paperboard and tissue, as secondary fiber in new paper production, or as raw material for non-paper products such as gypsum wallboard, cellulose insulation, and molded pulp products like egg cartons. Paper and paperboard products represent the largest portion of municipal solid waste, accounting for about 27 percent of all materials in the waste stream.(1, 2, 3, 4)
How it’s recycled
Recovered paper is combined with water in a large vessel called a pulper that acts like a blender to separate fibers from each other. Materials are collected and separated at a central point such as a materials recovery facility (MRF), where paper from single stream systems may be further separated into various grades.(1, 3)
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
The most prevalent error is recycling paper contaminated with food residue, grease, or other substances, which can compromise recycled paper quality and render entire batches unusable. Wet or damp paper is also difficult to recycle because moisture weakens paper fibers and can promote mold growth.(5, 7)
Environmental impact
Paper recycling saves enough energy to power the average American home for six months, saves 7,000 gallons of water, and saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions by one metric ton of carbon equivalent by avoiding methane emissions and reducing energy and water consumption.(5, 6)
