About Outerwear (coats, jackets, snow pants, etc)
What it is
Outerwear like coats and jackets are textiles in municipal solid waste, along with other items such as footwear and nondurable goods like sheets and towels. It is estimated that 95% of all used clothing, footwear, and other household textiles can be reused or recycled. The recycling rate for all textiles was 14.7 percent in 2018, with the recycling rate for textiles in clothing and footwear at 13 percent.(1, 2, 3)
How it’s recycled
Collected textiles are sorted into different grades and types of materials, with about 45% sold and reused as secondhand apparel, 30% remade into wiping and polishing cloths, and 20% reprocessed into fiber materials. Textiles are sorted by material type and color, then shredded with zippers and buttons removed using magnets; natural textiles like cotton or wool are cleaned and mixed through carding, then re-spun into yarn; synthetic fibers are processed into polyester chips that become polyester again.(2, 3, 5, 6)
How to prepare it
Make sure all your winter coats are clean and odor-free before storing them, as even the tiniest bit of dirt or sweat can attract pests and create unpleasant smells, so take the time to wash or dry clean your coats to ensure proper storage. Launder everything you plan to donate and make sure clothes are dry before packing them up (damp fabric can grow mold).(2, 3, 6)
Common mistakes
Old clothes and fabrics don't belong in regular recycling; they should be donated, repurposed or taken to textile recycling programs. Roughly 5% of donated clothes are directly sent to landfills, largely due to mildew issues, which can contaminate entire bales of clothing. Items must be clean, dry and free of oil/grease and odors.(2, 3, 6, 8)
Environmental impact
Landfills received 11.3 million tons of MSW textiles in 2018, representing 7.7 percent of all MSW landfilled. The rapid production and disposal of clothing leads to stuffed landfills where textiles decompose and release methane gas, an emission more potent than carbon dioxide. Textile waste harms the environment by releasing greenhouse gases when disposed of in landfills.(1, 4, 7)
Did you know?
On average, each person in the United States discarded roughly 47 kilograms (103 pounds) of textiles in 2018.(1)
