About Oil (motor)
What it is
Used oil is any petroleum-based or synthetic oil that has been used; oil keeps our cars, lawnmowers, and many other machines running smoothly, but during normal use, impurities such as dirt, metal scrapings, water, or chemicals can get mixed in with the oil. Used oils such as engine lubrication oil, hydraulic fluids, and gear oils used in cars, bikes, or lawnmowers can pollute the environment if they are not recycled or disposed of properly. Motor oil does not wear out—it just gets dirty—so recycling it saves a valuable resource.(2, 4, 5)
How it’s recycled
To recycle used oil, processors and refiners remove water, insolubles, dirt, heavy metals, nitrogen, chlorine, and oxygenated compounds from oil drained from automobiles or other machines. Recycled used motor oil can be re-refined into new oil, processed into fuel oils, and used as raw materials for the petroleum industry. Alternatively, it can be processed and burned for energy recovery, which involves removing water and particulates so that used oil can be burned as fuel to generate heat or to power industrial operations.(2, 4, 5)
How to prepare it
Take care not to spill any when you collect it and place it in a leak-proof can or container. Batteries and fluids should be stored safely, prior to recycling or disposal, in leak-proof covered containers or inside on a pallet with a liner or sorbent to catch leaks. Drain and recycle used oil filters as well—usually you can drop off the filters at the same collection centers where you deposit used oil.(1, 2, 6)
Common mistakes
Fluids should not be mixed together in order to avoid chemical reactions and eliminate extra testing, shipping, and disposal costs of mixed materials; do not allow any other substance, such as solvents, paint, pesticides, water, or antifreeze, to be collected in the same storage container as used oil.(2, 3, 6)
Environmental impact
The used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water—a year's supply for 50 people. Used motor oil is insoluble, persistent and can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals; it's slow to degrade; it sticks to everything from beach sand to bird feathers; it's a major source of oil contamination of waterways and can result in pollution of drinking water sources.(2, 4, 5)
