About Major appliances
What it is
Major appliances include items such as refrigerators, washing machines and water heaters, with ferrous metals (steel and iron) as the predominant materials, but different metals, plastics, glass and other materials are also present. In 2018, generation was 5.3 million tons, or 1.8 percent of total MSW generation. Recycling these items keeps valuable materials in use and helps manage hazardous components safely.(1, 3)
How it’s recycled
Appliance recycling typically entails recovery of refrigerant and removal of hazardous components followed by shredding of evacuated appliances, with metal components typically separated and recycled, while glass, plastics and polyurethane foam, are typically sent to a landfill. A survey conducted by the Steel Recycling Institute estimates the recovery of ferrous metals from shredded appliances to be 3.1 million tons in 2018.(1, 3, 6)
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
Refrigerants must be removed from appliances prior to recycling or disposal, and regulated refrigerants (e.g., CFCs) must be removed properly from refrigerant-containing devices before they are recycled or disposed. There have been reports of appliance dumping, venting of refrigerant, and release of hazardous components to the environment.(2, 3, 4)
Environmental impact
Household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, window air-conditioning units, and dehumidifiers contained chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used as refrigerant and within insulation foam—substances that are ODS that destroy the ozone layer if released into the environment. Older refrigerators/freezers contain ozone-depleting refrigerants and/or foam blowing agents, which are also potent greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to climate change when emitted to the atmosphere. Additional energy savings can be achieved if the components of disposed units are recycled instead of landfilled by eliminating the need to produce virgin materials.(2, 3, 4)
