About Ink/Toner Cartridges
What it is
Most used printer, toner, and inkjet cartridges are not regulated as hazardous waste but may consist of plastic particles, carbon black, fumed silica, dyes, and charge control agents. The typical spent cartridge is composed of 40 percent plastic, 40 percent metal, and small amounts of rubber, paper, foam, and toner. Toner cartridges are designated products under the EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guideline program for recycled-content products.(1, 3, 7)
How it’s recycled
A remanufactured printer cartridge is a cartridge that has been restored to its original performance standards and function, thereby diverting the cartridge from the solid waste stream, retaining components that have been through at least one life cycle and replacing consumable or normal wear components, and does not include a new plastic casing. A remanufacturable cartridge is disassembled and as many components as possible are reused, while cartridges that are non-remanufacturable are disassembled, sorted into material types and recycled. Remanufactured is considered the highest form of recycling by the Environmental Protection Agency because it requires the least amount of energy to make a product ready for reuse.(4, 6, 9)
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
Environmental impact
It takes 1,000 years for a print cartridge to decompose in a landfill fully. It takes about a gallon of oil to produce every new toner/laser cartridge. Remanufacturing toner cartridges contain an average of 90% reused/recycled parts and helps save up to 80% of energy that would be required to produce a new cartridge. Every remanufactured laser cartridge saves nearly two pounds of metal and plastic waste from being deposited in landfills.(4, 6, 9)
