About Household Hazardous Waste
What it is
Household wastes that are toxic, corrosive, ignitable, or reactive are known as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care when you dispose of them. It is important that people always monitor the use, storage, and disposal of products with potentially hazardous substances in their homes, as improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health.(1, 3, 5)
How it’s recycled
A hazardous waste is recycled if it is used, reused, or reclaimed, and a material is reclaimed if it is processed to recover a usable product or if it is regenerated. EPA developed the hazardous waste recycling regulations to promote the reuse and reclamation of useful materials in a manner that is safe and protective of human health and the environment.(4)
How to prepare it
Keep them in their original containers and never remove labels. Be sure to read product labels for disposal directions to reduce the risk of products exploding, igniting, leaking, mixing with other chemicals, or posing other hazards on the way to a disposal facility. Corroding containers, however, require special handling and you should call your local hazardous materials official or fire department for instructions.(1, 3)
Common mistakes
Improper disposal of HHW can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases putting them out with the regular trash. Never mix HHW with other products, as incompatible products might react, ignite, or explode, and contaminated HHW might become unrecyclable.(1, 3)
Environmental impact
Certain types of HHW have the potential to cause physical injury to sanitation workers, contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems if poured down drains or toilets. They can also present hazards to children and pets if left around the house. Improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health.(1, 2, 3)
