About Coolant / antifreeze
What it is
Antifreeze is a concentrated coolant made up of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol that is mixed with water before use in vehicles. It lowers the freezing point of water, ensuring that the liquid in your engine's cooling system remains fluid, even in frigid conditions, while also raising the boiling point to prevent overheating. Waste antifreeze may contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium in high enough levels to make it a regulated hazardous waste.(1, 4, 5)
How it’s recycled
Waste antifreeze can be recycled by three methods: on-site recycling in units purchased by the facility, mobile recycling service where a van or truck equipped with a recycling unit visits the facility, or off-site recycling where waste antifreeze is transported to a specialized recycling company. All waste antifreeze recycling methods involve two steps: removing contaminants either by filtration, distillation, reverse osmosis, or ion exchange, and restoring critical antifreeze properties with additives.(1, 3)
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
Mixing antifreeze with used oil, fuels, degreasers, radiator flush chemicals, or other substances could make usable antifreeze unusable and spent antifreeze non-recyclable. Never pour antifreeze down sewers, storm drains, septic tanks, dry wells or on the ground. Adding concentrated antifreeze without water will hinder your vehicle's ability to transfer heat and could lead to overheating.(2, 3, 4)
Environmental impact
Antifreeze can pollute groundwater, surface water and drinking water supplies if dumped, spilled or leaked, and is harmful to marine and aquatic life. It is illegal to discharge antifreeze into surface waters, which include lakes, rivers, or oceans, as it can cause serious water quality problems. Ethylene glycol, in particular, is toxic to humans, animals, and wildlife.(1, 2, 3, 6)
