About Aerosol Cans
What it is
Aerosol cans are widely used for dispensing a broad range of products including paints, solvents, pesticides, food and personal care products, and many others. Aerosol cans frequently contain flammable propellants such as propane or butane which can cause the aerosol can to demonstrate the hazardous characteristic for ignitability. Pressurized containers like aerosol cans should not be burned.(1, 3, 6)
How it’s recycled
Recycling processes involve compaction and melting of the metal with combustion of residues; subsequent heating at the high temperatures achieved in steel furnaces or aluminum smelters incinerates any toxic residues. Handlers of universal waste can puncture and drain aerosol cans, as long as they recycle the empty punctured aerosol cans and meet regulatory requirements for puncturing and draining.(3, 4, 5)
How to prepare it
Use the aerosol product for its intended purpose until it's gone. Containers holding compressed gases are empty when the pressure inside equals atmospheric pressure and the contents are completely sprayed out with minimal or no product remaining. Accumulate aerosol cans in a structurally sound container that is compatible with the contents, lacks evidence of leaking or damage, and is protected from sources of heat.(4, 5, 6)
Common mistakes
Environmental impact
Adding aerosol cans to universal waste regulations promotes collection and recycling and encourages the development of municipal and commercial programs to reduce the quantity of these wastes going to municipal solid waste landfills or combustors. Recycling can preserve valuable metal resources and reduces the demand on diminishing landfill space.(2, 3)
Did you know?
An estimated 3.75 billion aerosol cans were filled in the United States in 2016, and aerosol cans can account for nearly 40 percent of retail items that are managed as hazardous waste at large retail facilities.(3)
