About #2 Plastic - Natural HDPE (bottles and jugs only)
What it is
Milk jug plastics (Plastic #2, called high-density polyethylene, or HDPE) can make bottles, toys, pipes, crates, and other products. The recycling rate of HDPE natural bottles was 29.3 percent in 2018. HDPE plastics (plastic type 2) are among the most common materials accepted by the majority of state and territory recycling programs.(2, 3, 8)
How it’s recycled
Containers are washed to remove labels, adhesives, and residues. Plastics are either shredded or melted down and then used to make new plastic products. Materials are compacted and baled, then transported by truck, train or container ship and sold to different companies to make them into new products.(1, 4, 5, 10)
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
Environmental impact
HDPE takes a long time to break down naturally, meaning it can remain in our environment for hundreds of years, and the manufacturing process of HDPE requires fossil fuels, which contributes to carbon emissions and climate change. Using recycled postconsumer HDPE plastic to make new products is preferable to making products from raw resources as it saves landfill space, energy, water, resources, and reduces pollution.(4, 5, 8)
