About #2 Plastic - Colored HDPE (bottles and jugs only)
What it is
HDPE is used in bottles for milk and water and a wide variety of other plastic containers, including colored bottles for detergent and shampoo. Plastic #2 HDPE jugs, such as milk and detergent jugs, are containers with a screwtop and neck that can be recycled through many community programs. HDPE is valued for its durability and chemical resistance.(1, 5, 8, 9)
How it’s recycled
How to prepare it
Common mistakes
Contamination occurs when non-HDPE materials, such as dirt, food residue, or other types of plastics, find their way into the recycling stream, which can greatly reduce the quality of recycled HDPE plastic. Many plastic bags are labeled plastic #2, but they are too thin to recycle with hard plastics and will get caught in recycling machinery.(2, 5, 8)
Environmental impact
Making new products from post-consumer HDPE content uses 67% less energy, 90% less water, and produces significantly fewer emissions compared to virgin plastic production. However, HDPE has a non-biodegradable character, and when discarded improperly, these plastics linger in the environment for hundreds of years, leading to soil infertility and water pollution.(1, 6, 7)
