About #2 Plastic - Colored HDPE (bottles and jugs only)
What it is
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a type of plastic that is characterized by its high density and durability. It is made from petroleum and is commonly used in the production of a wide range of products, including milk jugs, juice bottles, and detergent containers. HDPE is highly recyclable and widely accepted in most curbside recycling programs. Colored HDPE is converted into plastic lumber, lawn and garden edging, pipes, rope, and toys.
How it’s recycled
The collected HDPE items are sorted based on their type and color to ensure high-quality recycled material. HDPE items undergo thorough cleaning to remove any contaminants, labels, or residues. The cleaned HDPE items are then shredded into small pieces or flakes, melted down to further refine the polymer, and cooled into pellets which can be used in manufacturing.
How to prepare it
Ensure the bottle is empty of any liquids or contents and rinse it with water to remove residue. Squash plastic bottles before recycling them to create more space in your recycling bin. Remove lids from plastic bottles due to current FNSB downstream restrictions - often the bottle top is a different type of plastic than the bottle.
Environmental impact
Recycling one HDPE plastic bottle out of ten in America would save 200 million pounds of plastic from going to the dump. Unfortunately, because of its lightweight nature, #2 plastic often blows away from landfills and ends up in the wild where it can harm animals and create an unsightly mess. Recycling HDPE can save up to 50% of energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30%.
Did you know?
Plastic #2 can be easily and efficiently recycled up to 10 times.
