About Tools - power

What it is

Power tools include drills, saws, sanders, and other electric or battery-powered equipment used in construction, woodworking, and DIY projects. The increased demand for power tools with rechargeable batteries has grown rapidly alongside portable electronics and smart products. Working power tools can often be sold or donated; however, these tools contain valuable materials including metals, plastics, and rechargeable batteries that should be recycled rather than discarded in landfills, where they can leak harmful chemicals and pose fire hazards.(2, 3, 6)

How it’s recycled

Power tools and their batteries are collected through retailers, e-waste collectors, or specialized electronics collection businesses, then identified and sorted for proper recycling. Batteries are typically discharged and shredded, with battery components separated mechanically. Metal extraction recovers valuable materials like cobalt, lithium, and nickel through either pyrometallurgy (high-temperature smelting) or hydrometallurgy (acid-leaching processes).(1, 3, 4)

How to prepare it

Remove batteries that are easily separated from power tools. Tape battery terminals with fully transparent, non-conductive tape or place each battery in its own plastic bag to prevent fires from batteries contacting each other or other metals. Take batteries to specialized battery recyclers, participating retailers, or household hazardous waste collection points.(1, 2, 5)

Common mistakes

Placing lithium-ion batteries or battery-powered tools in household garbage or commercial trash can cause fires during transport or processing. Another common mistake is misinterpreting the chasing arrow recycling symbol on batteries to mean they can "always" be recycled, when they actually require specialized battery recyclers.(1, 2, 5)

Environmental impact

Improper disposal of power tools and their batteries can cause fires during transport, at landfills, and at recycling facilities. Recycling prevents air and water pollution and conserves critical minerals such as cobalt and lithium that require significant energy to mine and manufacture, reducing the need for virgin materials and the energy and pollution associated with making new products.(1, 3, 6)

Did you know?

Power tool batteries are designed differently than phone batteries—they must provide larger amounts of energy for shorter periods, while cellphone batteries provide small amounts of energy over longer times.(5, 6)
