About Tools - hand
What it is
Hand tools are among the sources of metal scrap that can be recycled, typically made of steel and other metal products. Usable tools can often be sold or donated; however, these durable metal implements represent a recyclable resource when they reach the end of their useful life. Ferrous metals generation in municipal solid waste was 19.2 million tons in 2018, though hand tools are not separately tracked in EPA data.(1, 2)
How it’s recycled
Environmental impact
Scrap metal recycling is a growing industry with significant environmental and economic benefits. Recycling metal waste reduces releases of metals into the environment and reduces the quantity of virgin materials required. EPA closely monitors entities involved in scrap metal recycling, and recyclers must adhere to environmental best practices at all times.(1, 4, 5)
Did you know?
The recycling rate of all materials in appliances, including ferrous metals, was 59.8 percent, with ferrous metals from durable goods having a 27.8 percent recycling rate in 2018.(2)
