About Small / household electronics

What it is

Electronic products are made from valuable resources and materials, including metals, plastics, and glass, all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. E-waste is the fastest-growing component of the municipal waste stream in the United States. Electronic items such as cell phones, computers, computer equipment, and televisions may contain hazardous substances and may require special handling for disposal or recycling.

How it’s recycled

Electronics arrive at the recycling center where they are manually disassembled into their components, then undergo sorting into different categories. The dismantled e-waste is passed through a shredder, resulting in the electronics being broken down into tiny pieces. The separation process uses magnetic separation for ferrous materials, eddy currents for nonferrous metals like aluminum and copper, and water separation where heavy materials sink while lighter ones float.

Common mistakes

Lithium-ion batteries must be removed from the device and recycled separately, not placed in regular trash cans or recycling bins. One of the most common electronics recycling mistakes involves data destruction, as computer storage drives should always be fully destroyed to prevent the possibility of illicit data recovery. Even if you restore a device to factory settings, that only removes the pathway to the information and doesn't delete it.

Environmental impact

Electronic and electrical products contain hazardous substances including lead, mercury and other metals, flame retardants and certain phthalates. When abandoned devices deteriorate, they release hazardous chemicals including lead and mercury, contaminating surrounding soil and water systems. Recycling electronics helps reduce pollution that would be generated while manufacturing a new product and reduces the energy used in new product manufacturing.

Did you know?

For every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.
