What happens: Mixed paper is baled into min. 1100 lb. bales which are staged until we have enough to send a pure-load (nothing but mixed paper in the container). These pure-loads bypass additional processing in Anchorage and are shipped directly from the CRF to FNSB's downstream processor, Smurfitt Westrock (a paper and packaging manufacturer), which integrates recycling into their production lines.

About Paper (mixed)

What it is

Paper makes up 23 percent of municipal solid waste (trash) generated each year, more than any other material. This recovered paper is used to make new paper products, which saves trees and other natural resources. Mixed paper typically goes on to become paper material for building materials, egg cartons, insulation and other fiber-y doo-dads.

How it’s recycled

At the paper mill, the paper bale is loaded into a pulper, which looks like a giant blender. The paper is mixed with water and other ingredients, then it's churned and broken down. Things like tape, labels and staples are screened out. Chemicals are used to de-ink the paper slurry, and this slurry of fibers is screened for further cleaning. As it dries, it is formed into rolls of paper — newly recycled paper.

How to prepare it

Paper should be clean (no grease) and dry. Staples and plastic windows on paper envelopes are okay to leave on. Remove any paper clips, metal bindings, and plastic wrap/film. Residents and communities should ensure that products are clean, so they are easier to process at the recycling facility, and more likely to be recycled.

Common mistakes

One of the most prevalent errors is recycling paper that is contaminated with food residue, grease, or other substances. These contaminants can compromise the quality of the recycled paper and even render entire batches unusable. Plastic-coated paper cannot be recycled. The plastic coating can contaminate the paper recyclables, causing them to become trash instead of being recycled.

Environmental impact

It takes 70% less energy and water to recycle paper than to create new paper products from trees. Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that can contribute to climate change by avoiding methane emissions and reducing energy required for a number of paper products. Manufacturing one ton of recycled paper conserves approximately 7,000 gallons of water, saves 17 mature trees, and requires up to 60% less energy.

Did you know?

Every ton of mixed paper recycled can save the energy equivalent of 165 gallons of gasoline.
