About Computers
What it is
Computers are made from valuable resources and materials, including metals, plastics, and glass, all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. Computer monitors and circuit boards often include substances of concern such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Donating or recycling consumer electronics conserves our natural resources and avoids air and water pollution.(1, 2, 3)
How it’s recycled
Recycling includes sorting, dismantling, mechanically separating, and recovering valuable materials. Collection entities either send reusable electronics to recovery facilities to be reused, refurbished, and resold, or to recycling facilities to be sorted, cleaned, and processed into materials that can be used again in manufacturing. Recycling used electronics can yield materials such as gold, copper, glass, and aluminum that can be returned to the supply chain to be reused.(1, 3, 6)
How to prepare it
Delete all personal information from your electronics. Remove any batteries from your electronics; they may need to be recycled separately.(1)
Common mistakes
Failing to delete all personal information from electronics before recycling, and not removing batteries which may need to be recycled separately. When donating, people often give nonworking or incomplete computers when donation organizations have limited resources to diagnose and repair hardware, making functional systems with monitors, wiring, and software licenses much more useful.(1)
Environmental impact
Recycling electronics helps reduce pollution that would be generated while manufacturing a new product and the need to extract valuable and limited virgin resources, and electronic recycling also reduces the energy used in new product manufacturing. Approximately 25 percent of electronics were collected for recycling, with the remainder disposed of primarily in landfills, where the precious metals cannot be recovered. Older televisions and computer monitors with cathode ray tubes contain an average of four pounds of lead and may require special handling.(1, 2, 3)
