About Major appliances
What it is
Major home appliances are made up of approximately 75 percent steel, along with other metals such as aluminum, zinc and copper, as well as recyclable plastics and CFC refrigerants. A survey estimates the recovery of ferrous metals from shredded appliances to be 3.1 million tons in 2018, leaving 2.1 million tons of appliances to be landfilled. Recycling these materials helps conserve valuable resources that would otherwise require energy-intensive extraction and manufacturing.
How it’s recycled
Appliance recycling typically entails recovery of refrigerant and removal of hazardous components followed by shredding of evacuated appliances. Recyclers manually remove components like circuit boards, wiring, motors, and glass panels, then shredding machines break down the metal shells and internal structures into sortable materials. Metal components are typically separated and recycled, while glass, plastics and polyurethane foam are typically sent to a landfill.
How to prepare it
Unplug your appliance at least 24-48 hours before recycling to allow time for appliances to power down completely and for refrigerated units to defrost properly. Thoroughly clean the appliance by removing all food, debris, and personal items. Dishwashers, washers, and dryers should be fully drained to avoid leaks during transport. Tape doors shut with duct or masking tape to prevent them from swinging open. Note that refrigerant removal must be done by certified professionals, not homeowners.
Common mistakes
Never attempt to remove Freon or similar coolants from refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioners yourself—only certified specialists can legally do this under EPA regulations. Illegally dumping or attempting to dismantle appliances yourself are also common mistakes.
Environmental impact
Older refrigerators and freezers contain ozone-depleting refrigerants and foam blowing agents that are potent greenhouse gases contributing to climate change when emitted to the atmosphere. When appliances are improperly disposed of in landfills, they can release toxic substances into the soil and groundwater. However, using scrap instead of virgin materials to make new steel results in a 97 percent reduction in mining wastes, 90 percent savings in virgin materials use, 86 percent reduction in air pollution, 76 percent reduction in water pollution, and 74 percent savings in energy.
Did you know?
A typical decade-old refrigerator contains over 120 pounds of recyclable steel, and recycling one ton of steel saves approximately 2,500 pounds of iron ore and 1,400 pounds of coal.
