We know recycling lightbulbs can be confusing which is why for February’s recycle spotlight we made this guide on lightbulbs to help figure out where to take your bulbs.

At Green Star we take Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and Fluorescent Glass Tubes that are not shatterproof. These are run through our bulb crusher sponsored by Lotto Alaska. The bulb crusher allows us to fit 1,000 bulbs in a metal drum, drastically increasing our space efficiency with shipping bulbs to the lower 48 for recycling. What once would fill up half a shipping container now fits in one metal drum.

We charge $1 a bulb to crush them in our bulb crusher and send them out for recycling. You can bring in your Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and Fluorescent Glass Tubes to our Reuse IT store on 2134 Texaco Ave.

Please check your bulbs before bringing them in for recycling. LED bulbs and shatterproof bulbs cannot be recycled the same way as Fluorescent bulbs and would break our bulb crusher.

The FNSB Central Recycling Facility (FNSB CRF) accepts LED tubes with plastic bulbs and Holiday/string lights that DO NOT have glass bulbs. If you have glass string lights you would like to recycle, please remove the glass bulbs before bringing them to the FNSB CRF as no glass bulbs are accepted. The FNSB CRF also does not accept Fluorescent bulbs but the electrical components and ballast’s marked as containing “no PCB’s” can be recycled here if removed.

Republic Services recycles ALL bulbs! Fluorescent tubes are $3.15 each and almost every other bulb is recycled for $8.55 per pound. Please call them at 907-328-7025 if you have any questions.

Home Depot is confirmed to take Compact Fluorescent Bulbs for free but you might need to ask for a manager to get them recycled.

If you have any questions for bulbs that can be taken to the FNSB CRF or Green Star’s Reuse IT Store, please call 907-452-4152 or email

Thank you for trying to keep as many lightbulbs as possible out of our landfill!
