Reboot IT Technology Grants Program

Green Star’s Reboot IT Technology Grants program helps those needing a means to connect to the internet by supplying them with a refurbished laptop or desktop computer.

Since 2019, GSIA has provided over 300 computer systems to nonprofits, students, veterans, and other interior Alaskans who are not otherwise able to obtain or afford a computer; generally those who need to get online to work or study from home.

Reboot IT Technology Grants allow us to provide refurbished but fully functional laptop or desktop systems and peripherals to eligible candidates. All we ask in return is a suggested donation of $20 per machine, which allows us to cover the hard-cost of the new hard drive we install in each Reboot IT machine. This donation also helps ensure the program continues to be available to others in the future.

If you are a non-profit or individual in need of additional electronics in addition to computer(s) – items such as printers, network equipment, monitors, etc. let us know that too.  These items are also sometimes available through the Rebot IT program at very low cost.

If you are unable to make the suggested donation but need a computer for school or work, let us know anyway. In some cases even the $20 can be waived. And, of course, if you are in a position to donate more than $20 we are grateful for your additional support as well.

All machines provided through Greenstar’s Reboot IT Technology Grants program have been checked, cleaned, and include a new SSD hard drive and freshly installed operating system. As the name implies, these are not “brand new” systems, so they may lack some of the most recent bells and whistles, but each is a fully functioning and tested computer system. All of this work is done by Green Star staff, or volunteers donating their time to help the community.

To apply for this program simply complete our online request form or come by Reuse IT at 2134 Texaco Ave, Tues – Friday 10 AM – 5 PM and Saturday noon – 4 PM to fill out a short application.

After your application has been approved, we will contact you to let you know once your equipment is ready for pickup.

Closing the Technology Gap

Starting in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Green Star began the Laptop Refurbishment Donation as a project to try to meet the sudden need for people to access almost everything in their daily life online, including education and job opportunities, banking, medical appointments, and many other things that having a computer in your home provides. Since then, we continue to fill this need with our refurbished laptops to people of low income who need a computer.

A Community Effort

Several other local nonprofit organizations in our community contribute to this program by referring people with a need for a computer to Green Star, including the Rescue Mission, the Fairbanks Resource Agency, the JP Jones Community Center, the Bridge, the Boys & Girls Club, Stone’s Throw, the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and School District Foster Care.

If you or someone you know needs a computer but cannot afford one, please have them fill out a Reboot IT request form, or call (907) 452-4152 or email .

Volunteer-powered

Our Reboot IT discounted technology program is largely driven by the help of generous volunteers who donate their time and skills to help us repair laptops Green Star receives from the Fairbanks North Star Borough Central Recycling Facility.

Support and Sponsors

In 2021, Green Star was awarded a grant to fund supplies for our Reboot IT discounted tech. Program by Golden Valley Electrics Foundation’s Good¢ents Program. Thank you!

Computerwerks is no longer in business, but we appreciate the years of their support! Best wishes to Steve in his retirement!
