Outreach Manager

Working collaboratively as part of the Green Star Management Team, the Outreach Manager is responsible for overseeing GSIA’s events and connecting with the surrounding community. The successful candidate will manage recycling and educational events, develop new partnerships or methods for engagement with the local community, help recruit and maintain volunteers, and act as the primary spokesperson for Green Star through many different forms of communication. 

Pay range: $22-$24 DOE depending on experience.   

Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week, flexible schedule with some evening and weekend work expected.

Job Description 

General Program and Event Management (25%):

  • Work with the Management Team and Outreach Committee on event management, program development, and organizational plans.
  • Contribute to the development of short- and long-term operating plans for Green Star’s Event Recycling, communications, outreach, and education efforts. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in local recycling efforts and green business practices.
  • Manage and expand Green Star’s Event Recycling program, including: contract negotiation, coordination with event organizers, volunteer recruitment and organizing, and marketing for the programs. 
  • Organize and ensure adequate volunteer partners for Green Star booths at relevant community events, including events where Green Star provides event recycling services.

Outreach & Education (25%):

  • Maintain and update Green Star’s Earth Day Every Day recycling curriculum, publicizing it to students and teachers around FNSB
  • Maintain and update Green Star outreach materials, including the Fairbanks Recycling Guide, stickers, and educational displays. Create new materials as needed.
  • Develop new partnerships with local organizations to offer recycling education.
  • Lead the Outreach and Education Committee to engage a larger and more diverse portion of the Fairbanks’ community in recycling efforts. 

Communications (25%) 

  • Manage Green Star’s public relations and communications to support program goals and increase community awareness of our mission. Act as the primary spokesperson and public communicator for Green Star, including public speaking and attending community events. 
  • Promote Green Star events and information related to waste reduction, recycling, and electronics on social media, including Facebook, Instagram, and Green Star’s website. 
  • Write and distribute a monthly newsletter to Green Star’s supporters through Mailchimp. 

Volunteer Recruitment & Retention (25%) 

  • Recruit and train volunteers for ongoing support during Saturday Volunteer Days, collecting and sorting recycling at community events, and running Green Star’s booth at community events including but not limited to Earth Day, Midnight Sun Festival, Golden Days, and the Tanana Valley State Fair. 
  • Increase the amount of volunteers who regularly support Green Star and retain volunteers through regular communications and relationship building. 

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Green Star’s mission
  • Able to work with diverse sectors of the community including students, senior citizens, and previously underrepresented groups in the mainstream environmental movement. 
  • Experience with Google Drive, Google Docs, WordPress, Bloomerang, social media platforms, Mailchimp, and/or other data management and communication platforms. 
  • Able and willing to work some evenings and weekends. 

Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • At least two years of experience with event management.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience. 
  • Background or knowledge in marketing, communications, and social media.
  • Background or interest in education.
  • Knowledge of the recycling industry, sustainability, and social issues related to environmentalism and environmental justice.
  • Experience recruiting and leading diverse groups of community volunteers.
