Since 2006, Green Star has focused on electronics recycling as a critical program, due to the hazards associated with improper disposal of waste. E-waste in our landfills can leach toxins such as mercury and lead into groundwater, contaminating the drinking water that many residents consume from their wells. However, responsible disposal of electronic waste goes beyond separating it from our landfills.
Green Star has collaborated with Total Reclaim, Inc. to divert hundreds of tons of e-waste from local landfills since 2006. Interior Alaskans can rest assured that the hazards of e-waste will not simply be transferred to the developing world through unscrupulous “recycling” programs.
