Hello, Please join us Thursday February 15th from 1:45 pm – 4:00 pm at the Atwood Building Rm 102/104 (550 W 7th Ave, Anchorage, AK). This meeting is an invitation-only series of roundtable discussions on the potential of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies to work in Alaska. National and international EPR experts will help us understand the concepts and choices we as Alaskans have.

Attached is the formal invitation again for reference from Kawerak’s representative to the Solid Waste Alaska Taskforce (SWAT). SWAT is comprised of representatives from ADEC, ANTHC, RurALcap, Zender, and Kawerak.

For many of our rural communities, solid waste conditions are on a par with developing countries, and community efforts to haul out harmful wastes are stymied by the cost. EPR may help finance those efforts, reduce health risk burden, and create both rural and urban jobs. SWAT is keenly interested in yours and other stakeholders’ impressions of whether EPR in Alaska could work, and if you think it worthwhile to explore EPR further to determine the best type for Alaska, as well as the best process in its implementation. As a leading industry, rural or environmental stakeholder, and/or policy expert we value your opinion. We know that you will be able to provide us with information specific to your area of expertise, and help us understand which questions we should be asking next.

This meeting is paired with a public morning session at the Alaska Forum on the Environment Conference designed specifically to introduce you and other invitees to EPR. The public session, led by our invited EPR experts, takes place at Dena’ina Center on Thursday morning (Feb 15th 9am-10:15) and a second calendar invite will follow. If you are not already registered, as a participant of the afternoon invitation-only meeting, the Alaska Forum has graciously agreed to waive your registration fees for the day.

As an fyi, you can read more about the impetus for this meeting, a program called Backhaul Alaska, here: www.BackhaulAlaska.org

We will send out quick introductory resources to peruse prior to the meeting.

Thank you for your consideration of this important event and thank you if you have already RSVP’d . If you haven’t yet RSVP’d, you can simply accept this calendar invite.

Regards,
Simone
